Life Choices Counseling Center offers a wide variety of learning and growth experiences for individuals, couples, and families. One of the specialties offered involves counseling children from ages three years to twelve years using child centered play therapy. Play therapy is a structured, theoretically based approach to therapy that builds on normal communicative and learning processes of children (Carmichael, 2006; Landreth, 2002; O'Conner & Shaefer, 1983). Therapists strategically utilize play therapy to help children express what is troubling them when verbal language to express their thoughts and feelings fails (Gil, 1991). Toys work like the child's words and play is the child's language (Landreth, 2002). Through play therapy, therapists help children learn adaptive behaviors (Pedro-Carroll & Reddy, 2005). A positive relationship develops between the therapist and the child. This provides a corrective emotional experience necessary for healing (Moustakas, 1997). Play therapy can promote cognitive development, provide insight, and help resolve inner conflicts of dysfunctional thinking. (O'Connor & Schaefer, 1983; Reddy, Files-Hall & Schaefer, 2005). Along with this specialty, Child Parent Relationship (CPR) Training is also available, in which the therapist teaches a parent the basics of child centered play therapy.The parent then begins play sessions at home, which has been shown through research to be evidence based extremely effective in helping reduce tension and frustration in both parent and child. Parent Child Relationship (CPR) Training has also been shown to be evidenced-based effective through research to rebond severed or unhealthy parent child relationships.Counseling can increase self esteem, improve communication, resolve conflicts, improve family relationships, and provide emotional support in times of crisis.
